The Kairos research bot

You are probably here because Kairos-Research turned up in your server logs and you wanted to know who that was. Fair enough. Here is the whole thing, honestly, in about thirty seconds.

Who runs it

Kairos is a small outreach tool built and run by Taybridge Group Limited, a company registered in Scotland (No. SC885181) and based in Brechin, Angus. It is run by one person, not a data broker — so if you write to the address at the foot of this page, he is who answers.

What it does

When one of our customers is about to email your company, the bot reads a small number of pages from your own public website — normally your home page and one or two of your About or Services pages — so that the email they send is about what you actually do, rather than generic filler that could have been sent to anyone.

That is the entire job. It reads what you have chosen to publish about your business, and then it goes away.

What it does not do

• No social platforms. It never touches LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Instagram or anything like them. Those hosts are refused in the code before a request is made, not merely discouraged in a policy document.
• No email addresses. It does not build a list of addresses from your site. There is no address-harvesting step in it at all, and every link address — mailto: ones included — is stripped out of the text it keeps.
• No personal data harvesting. It is looking for what your company does and where it does it, not for people.
• No bulk crawling. A handful of pages, once, then it stops. It does not walk your whole site and it does not come back repeatedly.
• No ignoring robots.txt. See below.
• Nothing behind a login. It does not sign in, submit forms, or follow anything that is not a plain public page.

How it behaves

• It identifies itself honestly on every single request: Kairos-Research/0.1 (+https://bot.yourkairos.tech)
• It reads your robots.txt before it fetches a single page from your site, and again for any host it is redirected to. If your robots.txt cannot be reached, or answers with a server error, it treats that as no and fetches nothing — it fails towards leaving you alone.
• At most three pages per company. One request at a time, at least a second apart. It will never be the reason your server is busy.
• It honours Crawl-delay up to ten seconds. Longer than that and it gives up on the page rather than sit on your server waiting.
• Having read a company once, it does not look again for about three months.

How to block it

Put these two lines in your robots.txt:

User-agent: Kairos-Research
Disallow: /

It will stop, from the next request onwards. A blanket User-agent: * rule blocks it too — we read the wildcard group as well as our own, which is why a site that already disallows everything has never heard from us.
